Woman docked over alleged peddling of 4.5 kg of Cocaine

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday arraigned a 38-year-old woman before a Federal High Court in Lagos, over drug trafficking. The accused, Alake Abdulrazaq, is standing trial on a one-count charge bordering on the offence. She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Mr Abu Ibrahim, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 12. He said that she was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, during the outward clearance of passengers onboard an Ethiopian Airline flight to India. Ibrahim said that about 4. 5kg of Cocaine was recovered from the accused, which she concealed in a neat wrap.

Man in prison for allegedly killing co-tenant over N5,000 electricity bill

A man, Chukwuebuka Okeke, who allegedly beat a co-tenant to death over N5,000 electricity bill, was on Monday remanded in Lagos prisons. An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said the accused should be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused, 28, who resides at No. 10, Tokosi St., Orile-Iganmu, is being tried for murder. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Man, 32, in court for raping 18-year-old girl

James Adamu, a 32-year-old man, who allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman in Ota, Ogun, on Monday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court. The suspected rapist has, however, been admitted to a bail of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. Adamu, who resides at No. 10, Bello Close, Olokomeji Ijoko in Ota, is facing a charge of rape.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 7 at his residence at 4.00 p.m. Gbesi said Adamu lured the girl into his house before having unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The offence contravened Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O. Banwo, who gave the accused bail and a surety, said the surety must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and also show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government. Banwo said the surety should also swear to an affidavit of means and submit four recent passport-size photographs to the court.

Israeli deputy prime minister resigns over sex allegations

Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom has resigned over accusations from several women that he sexually molested them, according to media reports. The 57-year-old man said on Monday in Tel Aviv that it had become necessary for him to resign, because the distress was becoming unbearable for him.

“I have had enough of the distress and I hope to protect my mother, wife and five children from further scandal. “My family stands behind me, but it is no longer worth the cost,” he said. Meanwhile, Israeli Attorney-General, Yehuda Weinstein, has launched an investigation into the claims, which forced Shalom out of the presidential race last year.

Shalom was a leading member of the ruling right-wing Likud party and had previously served as foreign and finance minister. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had tasked Shalom in May with leading negotiations with Palestinians. The talks stalled last year and Shalom had spoken out in the past against a Palestinian state.

Shalom was married to journalist Judy Nir-Moses, a member of one of Israel’s most prominent families. Israeli newspaper Haaretz had reported about accusations from a former colleague who accused Shalom of attempting to touch her inappropriately. After the accusations became public, other women stepped forward with similar allegations.

Meanwhile, politicians from the left-liberal opposition party, Merez, welcomed the resignation as a “victory for public norms” that must be followed by Israel’s political representatives.

A 27-year-old man, Peter Nweke, on Monday admitted that his gang was paid N12 million ransom when they abducted Prof. Kamene Okonjo in 2013. A statement from the police in Enugu said Nweke, who hails from Umumba Ndiagu in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, made the disclosure during interrogation.
The suspect said that he was contacted by one Ifeanyi Chukwuemeka from Iselle Uku in Delta who linked him to one of the Okonjo’s family members that helped them to perfect the kidnap. He said that Chukwuemeka disguised as a corps member seeking for assistance and entered the compound and made away with the mother of former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Ahead of the January 27, 2015 inauguration of a new government in Kogi State,  a group, the Faleke Solidarity Movement (FSM), has warned that if Abiodun Faleke was not declared the Governor-Elect of the state by January 10, 2016, it would ground activities in the state.

Giving the ultimatum in a communique released after its End-of-the-Year meeting in Kabba, the FSM said the declaration of Alh. Yahaya Bello as Governor-Elect is a travesty of justice.

The group insisted that Faleke was the right person to replace the late Prince Abubakar Audu, since they both contested on the same ticket.

The communique read: “It is unfortunate that INEC took the path of illegality by declaring Yahaya Bello as the Governor-Elect of the state. Faleke was on the same ticket with the late Prince Abubakar Audu and they had won the election before Audu’s death.

Court restrains Gabros from interfering with FC Ifeanyi Ubah

As the confusion over the acquisition of defunct Gabros Utd FC of Nnewi by business mogul, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah continues, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) last Friday restrained Chief Gabriel Chukwuma from interfering with the operations of FC Ifeanyi Ubah as a football club and its participation in the elite Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Remember that Chief Gabriel Chukwuma who sold Gabros Utd as well as its stadium to Chief Ifeanyi Ubah recently claimed that he has retaken possession of the club and was making arrangements to take part in the forthcoming 2015/16 football season.

Abductors of two Catholic priests in Delta demand N100m ransom

ASABA-  Suspected kidnappers of the two Catholic Priests kidnapped in Delta state have reportedly established contact with the Issele-Uku Diocese demanding a ransom of N100 million.
Rev. Fr. Franklyn Odiaka and Rev. Fr. Moses Nwanochei were last Friday kidnapped around Obior, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state on their way from a ceremony in honour of their Bishop, Most Rev. Michael  Elue.
A source within the Diocese, who spoke with Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said the abductors contacted  some of their priests in the diocese.
While noting that the church has begun  praying for the release of the priests, the source said that the kidnappers insisted on getting the N100 million ransom before they will release their victims.

Police arrest 12 suspected cultists for beheading man

LAGOS—Twelve men, who have been on the wanted lists of the Police for allegedly beheading one Afeez Obokwu in May this year, have been arrested by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti Yaba.

It was learned that Obokwu’s headless body was recovered on  the highway at Oyingbo railway while the severed head was recovered by the Police  at the Otto Ilogbo, Ebute Meta area.

The suspects arrested by the Police on tip off by members of the public include  Kazeem Ajani, Suliamon Bello, Idowu Morawo, Abiodun Adeleke,Taiwo Jayesimi, Aberdeen Sanjowa,Abubakar Umaru, Ogunlade Dayo, Sodiq Olalere, Lekan Ajayi, Jamiu Wahaab and Kudus Olatunde.

While describing the suspects as serial killers, the Police said some of the suspects were earlier arrested and charged to court but were released.

From investigation, the suspects belong to two rival cult groups called the Otto Boys with allegiance to the  Eiye cult and the Apapa Boys with allegiance to the Aiye cult  with their base at the Ebute-Meta area of the state.

What is your take on plans by some governors to either sack or cut down on salaries of civil servants?

It is a truism that all is not well with the state of Nigeria’s financial economy. The current situation, if the truth must be told is that we are in dire straits. This time calls for deep reflection and serious financial reengineering by managers of the public sector.

This requires creative, strategic and visionary leadership by leaders at all levels because the reality is that the resources accruing from crude oil sales are dwindling by the day on account of falling oil prices in the international market .

Above all, leadership is about the ability to take the right decisions at the right time by putting the people first. Interestingly, governors should cut down on frivolous expenses to meet their financial obligation, especially workers salaries and payment to pensioners.

Appeal Court sacks Akwa Ibom State Gov

Embattled  Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State yesterday got more than he bargained for at the Court of Appeal, Abuja.
The court  voided the April election that brought him to power  and ordered fresh poll in the state within 90 days.
The ruling  appeared to have complicated matters for the governor who had approached the court to  with a view to setting aside the  October 21 verdict of the State Governorship Election Petition tribunal which cancelled the results of the April 11 election in 18 of the state’s 31 Local Governments  and ordered a rerun.
The appellate court, in a unanimous decision, held that from the evidence presented by parties at the election tribunal, it was clear  that Emmanuel did not win the majority of valid votes cast during the election.

28 Nigerians deported from Italy,Belgium

Twenty eight Nigerians were on Thursday deported for residing in three European countries without valid visas.

The Nigerians were repatriated from Italy, Switzerland and Belgium.
48 Nigerians were on Nov.25, deported from the United Kingdom for various immigration offences.
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) source at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said that 24 of the returnees were repatriated from Italy and two each from Switzerland and Belgium.
According to the source, the deportees are mainly males flown into the country in a Meridiana Fly aircraft, from Rome.
The source said the deportees arrived at the Hajj Camp area of the airport 7.25 p.m. and were received by Nigerian Immigration Services and other security agencies.

Job-hunting Mourinho to stay in London

Jose Mourinho will remain in London despite being sacked by Chelsea on Thursday, according to the agency which represents him.

The 51-year-old Portuguese says he intends to get back into a job as soon as possible, but in the meantime will be helping “friends” in the cut-throat business of football management.
